The 5 best swing tips that worked for GOLF.com staffers in 2025
Golfers are always looking for ways to improve. Whether it be scouring the internet for quick-fix swing videos or discussing swing feels with your playing partners, we’re always searching for ways to shoot lower scores. I know I’m guilty of this. I could be doing something completely unrelated to golf, and then BAM … a new swing feel pops into my mind. Some might call that an obsession (or even a sickness), but I know I’m far from the only one who’s experienced these sorts of epiphanies. If this sounds like you, read on below where a few of our GOLF staffers shared the swing tips that worked best for them in 2025. Who knows, one of them might be just the thing you need to take your game to the next level. Changing trajectories made simple Tommy Fleetwood taught me his very simple trajectory tip. Imagine five golf balls are laid out in the hitting zone, running parallel with the tips of your shoes. The center ball is the center of your stance, just as it would be for your 7-iron. If you want to play a low trajectory, align yourself to hit the ball one back from the center ball (the fourth ball in the 5-ball line). If you want to really play it low, hit the last ball. If you want to hit it higher than stock, play the lead ball. From there, use your stock swing — don’t lift or lean back or even crank down on the ball like you normally would. This change in ball position should be enough to knock 20-25 feet of loft off your trajectory. —Sean Zak More speed for better bunker play I was paired in a pro-am with former U.S. Open champ Michael Campbell, who, when he wasn’t making fun of my swing, managed to chime in with some useful green-side bunker advice for getting the ball up higher and softer. For that, he said, I needed more speed, which I could get by feeling as if the handle of the club was stopping at impact while the club head continued whipping through. The feeling was that of the club moving swiftly past the hands. It’s also key, he said, to address the ball with the blade wide open – not by manipulating it with your hands at address but by gripping it more openly. Too many amateurs, he said, address the ball with the club square in the sand, which prevents them from taking advantage of the bounce. That’s the gist of it, I think. Campbell has a Kiwi accent, and I was so busy talking smack back to him that I’m not sure I heard him right. But my sand play has gotten better, so I’m willing to believe it wasn’t just a placebo. —Josh Sens Move the ball back for more in-to-out Conventional wisdom says that you should move the ball slightly up in your stance for driver swings to promote an upward angle of attack. That may be sound advice, but over time, I learned this year (albeit via self-diagnosis), my ball position had been creeping too far forward in my stance, leading me to reach out for the ball and leave the face open. The result: blocks and slices. The solution: yes, move the ball back! I’m still not hitting it like Rory, but a further-back ball position has helped me attack the ball with a squarer face and also from the inside, for more solid contact. It works. Usually. For now. —Alan Bastable A quick and easy grip check Next year is going to be the year when I stop topping/thinning the ball. To get there, I spent an afternoon with GOLF Top 100 Teacher to Watch Kelan McDonagh, who said one move I needed to make was to use a weaker right-hand grip. And how would I know whether it was in the correct spot? With a simple check. McDonagh said he picked it up from his mentor, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Hall of Famer Mike Adams. McDonagh had me release my right three fingers from the club — and if they were pointing to the ground at a 45-degree angle, I was in the correct position. —Nick Piastowski Hit the gym for more speed This year, I started getting in the gym for the first time in my life — and the gains I’ve made on the course have been noticeable. With the help of a PGA Tour trainer, I’ve been working my “golf muscles” three times a week, and the gains have me hitting it longer than ever before (You can read about it here!). I know it can be easy to point to the John Dalys of the world as a reason that you don’t need to hit the gym to play great golf, but the truth is, most golfers will play much better with a little time in the gym. Give it a shot, and you’ll be amazed at the results. —Zephyr Melton

LIV CEO speaks: TV ratings, PGA Tour arms race, and how ‘change’ looks
Before you consider the enormity of the task facing LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil — before you debate the merits of TV ratings and PR battles and a sport in a prolonged state of competitive upheaval and $5 billion in Saudi funding — you must first remember something very critical. Scott O’Neil chose this. “How you live is truly a choice,” O’Neil wrote in his book, “Be Where Your Feet Are.” “What you’re going to do and who you are going to do it with, those are choices only you can make. That was my ‘aha’ moment.” In two decades as a sports executive (mostly in basketball), O’Neil has earned an MD in organizational surgery — first as a rising marketing and sales executive with the New Jersey Nets and Philadelphia Eagles of the early-to-mid-90s, then as president of Madison Square Garden Companies with the early-Carmelo Anthony Knicks and finally as the CEO of the Process-era Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils. In all of those jobs, O’Neil found himself selling the business of losing — and navigating the path back to winning. These experiences forged a worldview O’Neil leans on today, as the chief executive of a golf league still in its infancy. Since replacing Greg Norman as LIV CEO in January 2025, O’Neil has sought to overhaul LIV’s business, reorient its standing in the pro golf world and lay the groundwork for a pathway to profitability. These goals might sound opaque, but they’ve yielded some tangible shifts: In November, O’Neil announced LIV — an organization so attached to 54-hole tournaments it is named for the roman numeral for 54 — was extending its events to 72 holes, effective immediately. As the calendar turns toward 2026, there are still many questions left for O’Neil’s league to answer: About LIV’s changing tune over the “rivalry” with the PGA Tour, its long struggle for financial viability and, perhaps most pressingly, how the league judges itself. Earlier this week, I spoke to O’Neil about all of these topics and more; our conversation below has been lightly edited for length and clarity. Scott, I’ve heard you refer to yourself a few times as a “change agent.” What did you think needed to be changed about LIV Golf when you took the job? Yeah, I would say any four-year-old business in a very mature industry needs to be nimble, hard-charging, relentless. Needs to be on the journey of evolution, if you will. What the group went through here to build and break through in golf — I don’t know if we’ll ever see it in our lifetimes again, and I think it’s somewhat spectacular. What I’m coming here to do is to take that foundation and build the business. There are a whole host of paths that may lead us on. One is clearly on the golf side — on the golfer side. When you start to see faces like Tom McKibben, Josele Ballester and David Puig and Caleb Surratt — when you start to see an emerging next generation of talent, it should give us confidence that this is going in the right direction.

Tour Confidential: Was 2025 Rory McIlroy’s Best Season Ever?
Rory McIlroy fell to Matt Fitzpatrick in a playoff at the DP World Tour Championship but still secured his seventh season-long Race to Dubai title, bringing a spectacular season to a close. During this standout year, McIlroy captured three PGA Tour victories—most notably his Masters triumph that completed the career Grand Slam—and played a pivotal role in Europe’s away victory at the Ryder Cup. But does all that make this his greatest year ever? James Colgan, News and Features Editor: Without a doubt, this was the finest season of Rory’s career—though perhaps not for the most obvious reasons. Yes, the Grand Slam was monumental, and the Ryder Cup win on foreign soil—which McIlroy himself labeled one of golf’s toughest feats—only added to the glory. But to me, the collective weight of these achievements outweighs each individual milestone. This was the year McIlroy firmly established himself as the premier player of his generation. Even if more victories lie ahead, 2025 will forever stand as the cornerstone of his enduring legacy. Josh Sens, Senior Writer: Absolutely. It wasn’t just about the titles—it was the manner in which he claimed them. Consider his dramatic Masters victory, ending a decade-long major drought at the very course that had caused him so much anguish. Then there was his Ryder Cup performance, where he delivered under intense pressure and amid hostile crowds. Moments like these will linger in public memory far longer than any trophy or ranking. Josh Schrock, News Editor: Unquestionably. As my colleagues highlighted, it’s the combination of what he achieved, how he did it, and where it happened. He conquered legendary venues like Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass, and Augusta National, putting past demons to rest while steering clear of potentially devastating collapses. After his Masters high, he battled through a period of achievement-related fatigue, rallied with an inspiring performance at The Open, captured the Irish Open in thrilling fashion, and ultimately guided Europe to a historic away Ryder Cup win. As James noted, McIlroy now stands not only as the best of his era but possibly as the greatest European golfer of all time.

Harewood Downs Golf Club in Buckinghamshire is taking significant environmental action by planning the installation of three on-site water storage reservoirs
Approved by Buckinghamshire Council earlier this year, the project is set to begin construction in April 2026. Its aim is to capture drainage water from across the golf course property. This collected water will then be treated and reused for irrigation, specifically targeting the club's greens, tees, approach areas, and eventually the fairways. Situated near the newly renovated clubhouse, in the area between the second and ninth holes, the reservoirs will have a combined capacity of 19,500 cubic metres. Water usage represents one of golf's most pressing environmental concerns globally, with billions of litres consumed daily on courses worldwide. As the sport increasingly adopts sustainable practices, recycled water is becoming a vital solution for many clubs. Harewood Downs now joins this expanding group of environmentally conscious facilities. Upon completion of the reservoirs, the club will significantly reduce its reliance on external water sources for course maintenance.

England Golf Past President Christine Pascall has been appointed MBE in the King’s Honours List for services to the sport of golf. England Golf Past President Christine Pascall has been appointed MBE in the King’s Honours List for services to the sport of golf. Pascall, who was England Golf President in 2023, has enjoyed a wonderful career in the game, in which she has also given a tremendous amount back. During her career, Pascall won the 1972 English Girls Championship and represented the England Under 18 Team in the same year. She was part of the England Ladies’ Team from 1979-1981, and played in both the European Ladies’ Team Championships and Fiat Trophy in Italy in 1979. Pascall was also part of two Curtis Cups Squads, while at county level she has been county champion of Durham four times, while also being Durham Seniors champion in 2005 and Northern Senior Champion in 2006. Pascall captained England at the European Young Masters, and the Girls’ Home Internationals seven times – winning all of them, and also led England to victory on three of four occasions captaining the Ladies’ Home Internationals. She also led England in the European Girls’ Team Championship and two World Girls’ Championships in Canada. The Hartlepool Golf Club board member has been an England selector for 13 years for each of the ladies and girls’ squads, while in Durham, Pascall has undertaken many roles including Durham Seniors Captain, Northern Seniors Captain, County Captain, Training Officer, and Girls’ Coaching Co-Ordinator, while she has also been on the Durham Junior Girls’ Committee for 16 years, and a Ladies Voting Member for four years. She said: “I am delighted for golf that I have been awarded the MBE. Not that I have ever thought about reward for all I have put into golf, but receiving this award makes all the hard work worthwhile.“I hope it will encourage more girls and women into the game so they can get the same enjoyment from it as I have. “My proudest moment was becoming England Golf President in 2023, it was a great year and I thoroughly enjoyed all the events I attended, watching some superb golf, attending dinners, and most of all, meeting the officials at the golf clubs who were always so proud of their golf courses.“It has also been great selecting and seeing golfers coming through the system and playing for England.” Asked what golf means to her, Pascall admitted: “Golf is a way of life to me, almost every day I am involved in some area of golf whether it’s girls’ coaching or junior events at Hartlepool, or carrying out work for the Board at my club, selecting England teams, or even just watching golf. It’s also been very rewarding when I’ve received thanks from golfers with whom I have had involvement, without realising the impact I had on them – the unexpected thanks.” Looking to the future of the game, Pascall added: “Most of my time in golf has been with girls and women, but during the time as President of England Golf, it has given me a bigger appreciation of all forms of the game. I would love to see more girls and women coming into the game, as well as more mixed golf. I’d like to see more unions and associations merging, and more men and women playing in the same competitions at club level. “I’d also like to see more people coming forward to volunteer. When people come forward to volunteer, they normally enjoy it so much that they want to do more. We need more volunteers at club and county level for a variety of different jobs. I have achieved so much from playing golf, but I have had so much pleasure and enjoyment from volunteering.”

In 2025, the global golf industry will continue to expand, and the market size is expected to exceed US$20 billion, with the Asian market performing particularly well. Policy support such as the "National Fitness Plan" and the Hainan Tournament Restart Plan further promote the development of the industry. The United States remains the largest consumer market, accounting for more than 80% of global demand, but its local companies face fierce competition from low-priced Chinese products, leading to intensified trade frictions.

Exploring the Viability of Installing Artificial Grass on Soil
When it comes to transforming your outdoor space, artificial grass emerges as a water-saving and property-enhancing alternative to natural grass lawns. However, the successful installation of artificial grass on soil demands careful preparation and adherence to a specific set of steps. Gacci is here to guide you through the essential considerations for laying artificial grass on soil. Can I Install Artificial Grass on Top of Natural Grass? The answer is a firm no. The key to a successful artificial grass installation involves the removal of natural grass and any organic matter. A proper base is essential before laying artificial turf on soil. Attempting to install artificial turf directly over natural grass can result in an uneven and unattractive surface, leading to potential damage. The presence of growing grass beneath the turf can cause issues such as poking through the backing, lifting, sinking, or trapping moisture. How to Lay Artificial Grass on Soil While laying artificial grass on soil is not an overly complex process, it requires attention to crucial steps to ensure a seamless installation. Step 1: Gather Your Tools For the installation, you'll need some specialized tools, including: - Sod cutter, hoe, or shovel - Rake - Plate compactor or heavy drum roller - Bow rake - Utility knife Renting a compactor might be advisable for larger areas, making the process more efficient. Step 2: Remove the Topsoil Use a sod cutter, hoe, or shovel to cut away the existing grass, sod, and unwanted vegetation from the marked areas. Ensure removal of large rocks or roots, and set the sod cutter depth to 2-3 inches (or up to 4 inches in colder climates) to address cold-weather ground expansion and contraction. Step 3: Grade the Surface After topsoil removal, grade the areas of application using a rake. Lightly water down the graded areas, and consider using a plate compactor or heavy drum roller to level the dirt. Achieve 80-90% compaction for optimal results. Step 4: Base Application Apply the base material evenly over the prepared area. Typically, 1 ton of rock base covers 100 sq ft of artificial turf yard with a 2" base. Adjust the amount of rock base for different base depths. What Is the Best Base for Artificial Grass? For most artificial turf installations, the recommended base is ¾" to ¼" crushed drain rock. This material provides drainage and a level surface, capable of draining up to 30 inches of water per hour. The base depth may vary based on climate, with 4" being the standard recommendation. Level & Compact the Base Using a sod roller, plate compactor, or hand tamp, compact the base thoroughly to create a smooth and solid surface. Wetting down the area during compaction aids in achieving the desired results. Do I Need Underlay for Artificial Grass? While not mandatory, some applications benefit from certain turf underlays: - Padded underlay for sports fields or turf on concrete - Drainage underlay for roofs, lawns with poor drainage, or indoor facilities - Weed barriers for landscaping prone to weed growth Step 5: Prepare the Turf Roll out the artificial turf next to the installation area while waiting for the base material to dry. Ensure the turf lies flat by working out any misshapen spots in advance. Step 6: Place the Turf Stretch each panel of turf with the help of another person, lifting and placing it on the base. Avoid dragging the turf to prevent an uneven surface. Step 7: Cut the Turf Use a utility knife to cut panels of turf on the underside if needed. Make longer cuts with a series of shorter cuts along the length, ensuring the two panels remain close without touching. Step 8: Attach the Turf Fold the edges of adjoining panels back, apply artificial lawn seaming material on the base, and use adhesive to secure the turf edges. Weight down the length of the seam or use a heavy roller for optimal results. Step 9: Brush the Turf Fibers Brush the turf fibers using a push broom, backside of a rake, or carpet comb. This step helps maintain upright bristles. Step 10: Spread the Infill Evenly apply infill material, such as black crumb rubber or washed silica sand, over the entire area. Brush or comb the turf between infill applications, repeating until the desired level is achieved. Best Time of Year to Lay Turf The optimal time to lay artificial turf is during warm and dry weather, typically in spring and summer. A temperature close to 60 degrees Fahrenheit and above is ideal for achieving the best results. Embarking on an artificial grass installation project, whether for indoor or outdoor spaces, offers a remarkable transformation. With a decade of expertise at Gacci Artificial Grass, we understand the nuances that can significantly impact the longevity of your artificial grass. Here, we share crucial tips to ensure your synthetic grass remains in pristine condition for years to come. Understanding Sun Reflection and Melting Before delving into preventive measures, it's essential to comprehend the factors contributing to sun reflection and the subsequent risk of melting. Surfaces like Low-E glass windows, polished metal, white vinyl or aluminum fences, and mirrors can concentrate the sun's rays, intensifying heat and bouncing it onto artificial grass. This reflective melting can lead to temperature spikes, potentially reaching 175-200 ℉, causing synthetic grass to melt. Top 3 Tips to Prevent Artificial Grass Melting Tip #1: Addressing Vinyl Fences If vinyl fences surround the installation area and contribute to reflective melting, a simple solution is to leave a few garden feet parallel to the vinyl structure. This redirects the sun's reflection towards the ground, decorative stones, or mulch instead of directly onto the synthetic lawn-a cost-effective and straightforward remedy. Tip #2: Opting for Nylon Grass When dealing with low-emissivity glass on windows or doors, consider installing synthetic nylon grass in the adjacent area. Nylon grass boasts a higher melting point compared to polyethylene grass, ensuring resilience against heat. While slightly pricier, the investment guarantees that high temperatures from solar reflection won't lead to melting. Diamond Artificial Grass offers nylon grass options through special orders. Tip #3: Employing Anti-Reflective Measures For those hesitant to opt for nylon grass due to budget constraints, anti-reflective film on windows or doors is a discreet yet effective solution. This film reduces external reflection on artificial grass and is virtually unnoticeable. Alternatively, consider shade screens, mosquito net-like meshes, reflective paint, or awnings to mitigate reflective melting risks.
